Sweet and Slow on Isla Mujeres

The beer may be “so cold it’ll make your teeth hurt” but the welcome at Villa La Bella, an adults-only bed-and-breakfast on Isla Mujeres, a boho islet just off Cancun, is as warm as the Mexican sun. DSC01503

All six rooms at Curtis and Ashley Blogin’s flip-flop friendly beach house have ocean and pool views and, while simply furnished, are boldly painted in swaths of pink, turquoise and orange. Whimsy comes from thoughtful accents such as conch-shell showerheads, beds suspended from the ceiling with skeins of rope, and hammocks that encourage adoption of the laidback pace for which Isla is known and loved.

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast, then spend the day exploring the sights, rustic seafood restaurants and sugary shores of Isla’s five-mile length via golf cart, the main mode of transport here. At day’s end, suntanned and satisfied, you’ll come home to the breezy living room illuminated by punched-tin lanterns and Villa La Bella’s other signature libation: Ashley’s pina coladas, served ice-cold in a coconut shell.
