The Cocktail Every Shopper Needs

As any retail maven knows, shopping is hard work. Pounding the pavement, wrestling the crowds, combing clothing racks … it takes real stamina. Which is why it’s prudent to back away from the bargains every now and then for a refreshing pause. Duck into a café and savor a coffee, refuel with a healthy snack, or, if you’re so inclined, put some pep in your step with an adult beverage (or two).

After a tough few hours traversing Old San Juan’s three cobblestoned square miles I head for Calle Fortaleza's Aguaviva, where bartender Antonio is always happy to whip me up the ultimate post-retail refresher, an ice-cold watermelon sangria. Antonio not only makes a mean cocktail but he’s generous, too. Which is how I come to have his recipe to share with you. It couldn’t be easier to make, and if you’re not into watermelon or it’s out of season, you can always substitute another fruit juice. Salut, Jetsetters!

1 bottle Reisling wine

pulp of half a large watermelon, blended

3 ounces brandy

3 ounces triple sec

1 can Sprite or 7UP

1 orange, sliced into rounds

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher or punchbowl. Add crushed ice. Serve in a tall glass garnished with a watermelon wedge. Sip. Repeat. Shop!
